Harry Shao-Ta Chang was born on May 27, 1922, in Shanghai, China. He graduated from McTyire Primary School and later attended a Chinese public junior middle school. In 1939, he enrolled at St. John’s High School, and three years later, he was admitted to St. John’s University. Before completing his university studies, Japan invaded China following the Pearl Harbor event and occupied Shanghai. As a result, Harry left school and joined the Chinese Air Force in Kweilin, Kwan-si Province in southern China.

After a brief training period in Kunming, Yunnan Province, he was dispatched to the United States for combat pilot training at Thunderbird, Marana, and Luke Air Force Bases near Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona. He graduated as a Second Lieutenant fighter pilot and remained at Luke Air Base post–V-J Day to serve as an instructor for the advanced AT-6 and operational P-51 training. In 1946, he was transferred to a combat unit in northern China to fight against Communist forces. He participated in over 350 missions across central, eastern, southern China, and Kinman. He was later promoted to Squadron Commander, Group Commander, Wing Commander, Deputy DCS/Operations in the Ministry of National Defense, and Deputy Principal of the Cadet School. He was forced to land twice and bailed out once under enemy fire. After 42 years of dedicated service, he retired in 1984 as a Lieutenant General with 45 medals and multiple honors. He is now Senior Advisor at Zentraco International, S.A. in Geneva.
Harry became an Entered Apprentice Mason on November 19, 1965, advanced to Fellow Craft on December 17, and was raised to Master Mason on January 29, 1966—all in Szechwan Lodge No. 4, Taichung. He was elected Worshipful Master of the Lodge in 1981 for two years. Appointed Grand Bible Bearer in 1982 by M.W. Raymond M. Chang, Harry also served on several Grand Lodge committees including Policy, Finance, Rituals, and Charity, chairing the Credential and Publicity Committees in 1986–1987.
He was also a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Taipei Valley, and Orient of Taiwan and China. He received the Master of Royal Secret in 1967, served as Wise Master in 1972, Master of Kadosh in 1984, and Venerable Master in 1987. He was decorated Knight Commander Court of Honor (KCCH) in 1987. In 1968, he joined Afifi Temple, Washington A.A.O.N.M.S. as a Shriner.
In early 1947, Harry met Helen Chen. They married on July 23, 1948, in Pei King, China. In 1949, they moved to southern Taiwan and had three daughters: Linda, Shirley, and Jennette. Harry enjoyed flying, traveling, and playing golf with his family.
