1979-81 GRAND MASTER OF GLOC

Charles, C.T. Hsi

Most Worshipful Charles C.T. Hsi was born to a Christian family in Shanghai, China, on April 6, 1915. He is the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sung Ling Hsi. He was brought up in a Christian environment and educated in missionary schools and colleges in Shanghai. In 1936, he graduated from Soochow University with honors, a scholarship, and an athletic award.

Immediately after his graduation, he was engaged by Dah Sung Cotton Mill, the oldest textile mill in China, for a year and entered the real estate business in 1938 by establishing the Metropolitan Real Estate Development Corporation in Shanghai, which operated until 1945. After V-J Day, he founded his own trading firm, the China International Trading Company, in August 1945. This company was compelled to close after the communist takeover of Shanghai in 1949, at which point he sought refuge in Hong Kong. In late 1955, he moved to Taiwan and worked with several companies in Taipei owned by friends until 1969, when he founded his own enterprise—Johnson Associates, Inc.

Most Worshipful Brother Charles Hsi was initiated in Amity Lodge No. 1 on December 4, 1956, passed on January 18, and raised on March 5, 1957. From there, he served in the progressive offices of Steward, Deacon, Treasurer, and Warden, and was elected Worshipful Master of Amity Lodge No. 1 in 1965 and again in 1973. Since 1966, he has held a series of appointed offices in the Grand Lodge of China. In 1975, he was elected Junior Grand Warden and rose progressively through the ranks to be elected Grand Master in October 1979.

In addition to his zealous work in the Blue Lodge, Most Worshipful Brother Hsi was admitted to the Taipei Bodies of the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, U.S.A., in April 1974. He was elected Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection, Valley of Taipei, in 1976; served as acting Master of Kadosh of the Consistory in 1977; and was elected Master of Kadosh in 1978. He was elected Almoner in 1977 and 1979. In 1978, he was decorated with the Knight Commander of the Court of Honor (KCCH).

Most Worshipful Brother Hsi joined Islam Temple of the Shrine during Islam’s pilgrimage to Taipei in 1976 and is a member of the Ali Shan Oasis Shrine Club in Taipei. He is one of the charter members of David Au Chapter No. 1, Royal Arch Masons, and has served as Captain of the Host. He also holds memberships in the Order of the Eastern Star and the Taipei Square and Compass Club.

Most Worshipful Brother Hsi is married to former Miss Jean Chen and has a daughter, Elsie, from a previous marriage, who has since moved to the United States.
